5 Star Pizza

📍 Address: 148 Granite St, Quincy

Stars: (3.5)

I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pizza. The "Big One" at 18" is a nice big size and the prices are reasonable for all their menu items. Jalapeños with the buffalo chicken is a nice touch. It had a nice kick! We got it delivered and a nice gentleman came on time. We asked for extra blue cheese and we're given two containers. Thank you!

Barlata Tapas Bar

📍 Address: 1500 S Lamar Blvd, Ste 150, Austin

Stars: (4)

Good/bad/nearly ugly/ and worse The good: The food, the wine. Bread is good. Salad is pretty good. Most dishes including lamb, octopus (slightly salty) , shrimp, salad (overdressed), Iberico jamon decent quality but a complete mess of presentation. The bad: The initial service. No contact for 15 minutes. Finished water glass and well into 2nd water glass. Asked water boy for a drink other than water. Not completely understanding English he walks away. The ugly: After 15 minute wait, we order drinks. Ask for Titos, stirred, served up from non-waiter in addition to companion's drink. Her drink arrives ok, mine not. Titos arrives with lemon twist, lemon color and strong lemon taste. The uglier: I let the server know I don't want lemon. 5 minutes later the drink returns exactly the same sans lemon twist. Wow, fished it out? Next I walk drink back to bar and wait 5 minutes and finally explain I only want vodka. The bartender seems astonished and I tell him what I want and go back to table. 30 minutes in and no drink, companion finished hers. Server returns and asks what happened. Explain again. Drink finally arrives from different person who seems to understand delivering a drink in under 30-45 minutes is a priority. Did I mention it was 5:45 and the restaurant was only 1/3 full? Other: Multiple water boys are circling like vultures looking for 1/4 empty glasses to immediately fill. No slightly less than full glass can be missed! They will take your menu away repeatedly without you even having a chance to save it. Finally, quite gruesome. The beef heart arrived immediately after ordering? It was well cooked but drenched in balsamic vinegar sauce, yuck sweet. But worse it was off temperature in the danger zone of room temperature. Prepared quite sometime ago and then served to us. Also floating black specs in martini and it was tough to salvage this very inconsistent evening. Some very good cooking, some not so good cooking and a bunch of problems. Different aspects rate from 5 to 1 but 2.5-3, comes to 2 with so many problems. Probably better next time but probably not a next time.

Chipotle Mexican Grill

📍 Address: 46 Walkers Brook Dr, Reading

Stars: (2.5)

I come to this location frequently - and often with a larger group of people. The staff is always friendly and nice. The manager often gives us a free bag of chips or drink. The food is always excellent - it's a very consistent location. I have terrible food allergies and I've been to other locations where I've had trouble due to cross-contamination with allergens. I've NEVER had that problem here! My only complaint is that it's usually very cold in the seating area. I know it gets hot in the kitchen but maybe they need to control the temperature of the kitchen on a different zone (with the thermostat) than the seating area.

50 Plates

📍 Address: 333 NW 13th Ave, Portland

Stars: (3.5)

The food and drinks are okay. They have a decent Happy Hour. The vibe from the space is rather flat. I wouldn't recommend this for a regular dinner. For me it's a happy hour stop.

Hot Pot Buffet

📍 Address: 70 Beach St, Boston

Stars: (3.5)

What can I say? This is THE place to be if you love hotpot and are not super picky about quality. I have been there a half dozen times, each time sitting for 3-4 hours. I especially like the lamb and rib eye steak cuts though they come out a bit thicker and more frozen than I would have liked. Also, the ambience is certainly not upscale though there are two levels of seating, which accommodates single parties through large groups.. However, overall, the food is really tasty, the utensils clean and the service fast. My favorite veggies are the enoki mushrooms and napa lettuce. Also can't get enough of the fish balls. This is definitely the place to go if you are really hungry and want to cap your expenditures at a reasonable $30 per person. Otherwise, if you are looking to impress a date, go to Little Q down the street instead. I'd forewarn trying to curtail how much you eat - I usually wake up the next day feeling extremely drowsy and sounding like I smoked a pack of cigarettes.

Maudie’s Hacienda

📍 Address: 9911 Brodie Ln, Ste 900, Austin

Stars: (3.5)

Maudie's is a tex-mex classic here in Austin and they have a number of tasty dishes, but my personal favorite is the (beef) Fajita Greens Salad. It's definitely better than any salad I've ever had at a tex-mex establishment, and in my opinion it ranks up there with the more sophisticated salad choices available at a place like Leaf. Additionally, the staff here were very accommodating when I showed up with a large party to celebrate my birthday on a busy (packed!) Friday night. I really appreciated their help in getting seated, and I came here to express my gratitude to Jackie in particular. Thanks so much, Jackie!
