Fullerton Wines

📍 Address: 1966 NW Pettygrove St, Portland

⭐ Stars:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5)

One of NW Oregon's hidden treasures! An amazing selection of excellent wines, with the Momtazi Pinot Noir as it's apex, in my opinion. So excited that Fullerton has such a conveniently located, gorgeous tasting room in NW Portland. Definitely a destination winemaker and tasting room worth the trip!

Typhoon

📍 Address: 21900 Willamette Dr, West Linn

Just as the soft rains fill the streams, pour into the rivers, and join together in the oceans, so may the power of every moment of your goodness flow forth to awaken and heal all beings-- those here now, those gone before, those yet to come. --------------------------------- For over a year the space stood empty. And what a beautiful space it is. A sad reminder of all the businesses hit hard by the economic downturn. But, West Linn has been coming back. We've seen a number of new restaurants open in the last year at both the high end (Allium) and low end (Biscuits) of the dining spectrum. And now the latest location of Portland's Typhoon! chain has opened in the West Linn Central Village. They kept the best and most unique things about the space. The tree at the entrance and the large circular fire pit at the back. The rest has been redesigned to replace the southwest decor (cowhide booths) of the prior tenant with upscale Asian touches and it is beautiful. The original Typhoon! on NW 23rd was one of the first restaurants I remember visiting in Portland way back in 1996 close to when they opened. What set them apart then, as it does now, from many other Thai restaurants is their large tea menu. In the present day, what is most notable is the small serving size and the high price compared to other restaurants in the area. They are going for a high end experience in a high end suburb and I think they'll do fine. Not so much with families, because it can get painfully expensive really quick, but with people looking for a nice spot to have a business lunch or dinner. Part of the expense is that we tend to order more here because there are better options. In addition to the tea menu, they serve cocktails and strawberry or raspberry lemonade for the kids. But overall, our dinner here was two times what we normally pay for a Thai dinner at another local place. Ouch. The food quality is quite good and overall we've been happy. Nothing that we are mooning over, but we have been satisfied. It is a place where everyone in the family can happily eat, but as Mr. K said, "I'm left wanting more." The best item we ordered at our first dinner visit were the spicy green beans. We didn't particularly care for the drunken noodles. On our second visit for lunch, the prices weren't as painful and we enjoyed several curries. Overall a positive experience, but I think they are going to have a fairly narrow customer base because even in West Linn, we weigh quality, quantity and overall value. So far our service has been excellent. I suspect some very specific training takes place with their employees and it is almost painfully polite and formal. I started this review with part of a traditional Buddhist blessing and healing chant because we witnessed a ceremony yesterday in the restaurant. I don't know if this was the particular chant the monks used to bless this new venture, but it seemed appropriate. The doors are open, the restaurant has been blessed, we will see if the customers come.

Easy Tiger

📍 Address: 709 E 6th St, Austin

⭐ Stars:⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4)

Okay, everyone with me now, "beer cheese! Beer cheese! Beer cheese!" Easy Tiger is pretty easy to love. I've had just their drip coffee and a baguette to go, I've had food from downstairs to go and I've enjoyed sitting down for a beer (or four) over dinner and light snacks. They're always packed and for good reason. They've got their niche and they own it. And can I give a loud round of applause to all of the patient, organized and personable wait staff there?! I've sat out back when it is crazy busy, people sitting here and there, one person is drunk and about to puke into the creek and another person is making out with another chick he just met, while his bro is standing on the table like its THAT kind of German place and the service has always been quick and courteous. That takes mad skills. Best bites? See above. And their turkey sandwich is out of this world. Noms for the avocado. Their best value is definitely the snack board. Homemade chex mix, jerkey and two small pretzels accompanied with my beloved beer cheese. Check it out. It's situated slightly away from the 6th street craziness, but I can't promise craziness won't ensue there. One star off for the drinks being slightly overpriced. Great selection, but off a bit.
