Lee's Bakery

📍 Address: 4005 Buford Hwy NE, Ste C, Atlanta

It's probably good that I don't live in Atlanta or near here, because I would probably eat these until I was sick. There's not much to add to the reviews already given, but.. The sandwiches are ridiculous. Fresh made, tasty ingredients, sum even better than the parts, super inexpensive, and filling. I'd have to be pretty hungry to eat two of them and even then I'd still only be out $5. That is crazy. I had the grilled pork, which has a generous portion of pork, veg, herbs, and a sauce, with tasty (made on site) bread. I also had the tofu (about 4 hours later) and even though the bread had gotten a little soggy from sitting around for so long (my fault), it was still good. The spice is just there, but not hidden. I haven't been to any other banh mi places in the area to compare it to, but regardless, this place would be - at the very least - in my rotation. Open early and late.

Thai Basil

📍 Address: 1215 Thurlow St, Vancouver

I think we hit it on one of their less awesome nights, but it was still good, cheap, and hella fresh. Just not as vibrantly tasty. Will update again in a few weeks, I am sure.

Mike's Pastry

📍 Address: 300 Hanover St, Boston

Their cannoli filling is one of the best i've had, and i've had a lot of cannoli's. The line any night during the summer is absolutely outrageous so try going in the colder months during the week to get in and out quickly.

Out of the Blue

📍 Address: 215 Elm St, Somerville

On a cold wet night in the dead of winter, we were stocking up on libations at Downtown liquors and started to dream of the warmer days of summer. In a fit of seasonal affective disorder giddiness, we decided that the only solution to our problems would be to recreate a warm July day in our apartment. And gosh darn it, we were going to do it that night! We discussed turning the thermostat up to 80 and donning our favorite summer duds. We happily plucked a bottle of gin off the shelf in order to mix the classic summer cocktail. "Now what for dinner?" we pondered, "what screams summer here I come?" Seafood of course! Remembering friends' and neighbors' happy recommendations of Out of Blue, we headed down there, ready to get our summer party started. Our take out order of sauteed calamari, crab cakes, tomato and mozzarella salad, and fisherman's platter were ready in a much quicker time than expected, and we hurried home to get this picnic underway. Heat cranking, drinks poured, we started to dig in. Soon all mouths were full as we chewed. And chewed. And chewed some more. Is it time to swallow yet? Calamari. Chewy. Tomato. Chewy Mozzarella. Chewy. Fried seafood. Chewy. Crab cakes. Not chewy. But crumbly isn't much better. This is where the sad faces began. Second bites revealed more of the same. It was like someone had switched our dinner with rubber imitations. Looking suspiciously around for the hidden camera, we soon realized that while the joke was on us, it wasn't yet time for our 15 minutes. Too bad, I would kick total butt on I Love Money. Fast forward a few weeks and the decision was made to give Out of the Blue a second chance. "This time we'll dine in!" we exclaimed, willing to place blame on the travel time associated with take out. This is where the sad faces began. Again. Distant waitstaff all but refused to make eye contact. Fried Calamari remained chewy. Entrees of seafood risotto and baked scallops fared a bit better, but would have been much improved if they were served warmer than room temperature. How a "baked" dish is served cold is beyond me. Our waiter didn't comment on barely touched dishes and declined doggie bags. But hey, we didn't make a complaint on our end either, so I guess that's a non issue. Out of the Blue, you are out of my rotation.
