Parish Cafe and Bar

📍 Address: 361 Boylston St, Boston

Stars: (4)

The location can't be beat and the crowd is always lively and happy. I love the concept of the menu (the best sandwich options from other places) and particularly enjoyed the Nebo. It's also a fabulous spot for Friday happy hour with a great bar selection. That said, I wasn't overly impressed with the sandwiches I tried yesterday (we all split and I tried a tuna salad, the turkey wrap, and the steak sandwich). PLUS, and a full loss of a star for this one, the waitresses kept asking if I'd like another diet coke and never told me that I'd be charged $2.50 more each time I said yes (nothing like half of your bill being for your non-alcoholic drink!) I didn't realize I was living in NYC.

The Breakfast Club

📍 Address: 270 Western Ave, Allston

Stars: (4)

I love a good diner and this ones a lot of fun. The menu has a good amount of choice and it's all reasonably priced. The service was quick and friendly and I loved the vibe. Eighties diner all the way. I'll be back to try it again!

Barley Swine

📍 Address: 6555 Burnet Rd, Ste 400, Austin

Stars: (4.5)

I hate to leave anything but a perfect review. The food is exceptional here. Each dish is clearly cleverly crafted and executed and the service is great. However when I brought a group for New Year's eve several friends asked me, "will there be enough to eat." Legitimate question since it's definitely more gourmet servings. I had previously eaten at the old location and there were 17 courses so while small, you left fully satisfied and thrilled with the quality. For New Year's, the set price was much higher and there was half the courses from when I had been before. So the meal consisted of everyone giving me the hairy eyeball and feeling like I wanted to shrink under the table. Followed up by everyone being really annoyed when the bill came and it was a fortune. These are friends who don't mind paying a fortune for dinner but they just didn't feel they got the value. I admit, I didn't either. I was pretty bummed when we got in the car and they asked me to take them to In&Out Burger. Sigh. Not a great night.

The Breakfast Club

This is a very simple place with excellent food. I went twice and had eggs Benedict the first time and waffles the second time. I don't think I was there during peak hours so it was quiet and comfortable.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

📍 Address: 1400 S Congress Ave, Ste A190, Austin

Stars: (4)

Oh man. Hopdoddy's is a classic. Great HUGE burgers, wonderful drinks, local beer and pretty fast service (as long as you go at a decent time and there isn't a line out the door). The last time I went to Hopdoddy's I ordered the Thunderbird and Parmesan truffle fries and was not disappointed in the least. Their fries with the queso and green chile queso are amazing as well. I would recommend any of the fries. The only downside to Hopdoddy's is that the line can get really long and you have to stand in it to order. You can order a drink and be sipping on that while waiting in line though. If lines aren't for you, I would suggest driving by to make sure the line isn't out the door before you park. The line doesn't move super fast.

Blue Star Donuts

📍 Address: 1155 SW Morrison St, Ste 102, Portland

Stars: (4)

Hands down the most best donuts I've ever had and I don't regularly look for donuts. There wasn't much to the service other than the staff was super nice. We didn't wait long but that's because we went at a random time (slightly before 11am) Price range is what you'd expect for a place like this. Not crazy but not cheap. The gold is in the flavors. There's so many choices I wish I could have them all but I went with the creme brulee because it seemed like something I couldn't get anywhere else. The crunch was definitely there but as soon as you bite into it more, the dough was soft yet springy. It wasn't overly sweet. Seriously loved it.
