Pok Pok NW

📍 Address: 1639 NW Marshall St, Portland

Stars: (3.5)

Everyone knows that one annoying kid in college who spends a semester abroad and comes back to America as the self-proclaimed authority on culture. That kid is a restaurant, and its name is Pok Pok. I should note that we were visiting from LA, where delicious, authentic, inexpensive Thai food is at every corner in Hollywood. I'll admit that my standards were high, but Michelin doesn't lie, right? It was a red flag when the first page of the menu explained how to eat a rice dish with a fork and spoon, and the specific instances in which real Thai people utilize chopsticks. The second red flag came when we ordered, and my Thai-American friend properly pronounced the Thai dishes in his native tongue. "Well, your Thai is a lot better than mine!" said the server (yes sir, that would be the case as he is Thai and you are not). The third red flag came when the server "recommended" that Jasmine rice would pair well with the pork (because a table of five Asian people couldn't possibly already know that). The food was ok at best. The famous wings were VERY salty- I couldn't eat more than one. The pork dish and mussel pancake were fine, but cost triple the price for a third of the portion compared to LA restaurants. Pok Pok in Portland is a classic case of Big Fish/Small Pond. There aren't a lot of Thai people in Portland and not enough competitor Thai restaurants to push for true authenticity. Normally, I wouldn't fault a restaurant in a primarily Caucasian community for missing the mark on authenticity. However when you patronizingly claim that this is how it's truly done in Thailand, you better step up to the plate. It's not a surprise that Pok Pok didn't last long in LA.

Chipotle Mexican Grill

📍 Address: 274 Elm St, Somerville

Stars: (3.5)

First and foremost, Chipotle makes tasty burritos, tacos and other treats. That said, I have a couple of issues with them. One is the price of their guacamole. To get just a small dollop on your burrito, it costs more than entire avocado - $2. Their guac is delicious and far superior to that of my preferred burrito joint, Anna's Taqueria (Chipotle's lack of tomatoes in their guac seals it for me). Just like a drug dealer, they get you hooked on the good stuff and then jack up the price. Complaint #2 - these Chipotle worshipers who claim that their place is far superior to all else, and competitor Qdoba is absolute shit. This despite the fact that many of their menu items are nearly identical. Chipotle is Ford and Qdoba is Mercury - a few subtle differences, but the nuts and bolts are largely the same. Same tortillas, same rice, same (delicious) guacamole, same choices of salas including a corn-based one, same shredded cheese, very similar chicken (Chip's might be a tad spicier). 99 times out of 100 I'm probably going to Anna's, but Chipotle makes a fine burrito as well - just a little overpriced and very similar to one I can get in Porter Square.

Little Bangkok

📍 Address: 2225 Cheshire Bridge Rd Ne, Atlanta

Stars: (4)

What is up with all of the great restaurants situated on Cheshire Bridge Road? There is a good handful of places that are the best Atlanta has to offer. Situated next to the best that Atlanta's red light district has to offer. Puzzling. Little Bangkok is a new discovery. I've only eaten here once, but I went with a friend who comes often. We ordered an appetizer of shrimp rolls, which were pretty good. Tasted like the shrimp rolls at Doc Shey's. My friend was trying to be cool and order for me. He tells the waiter to bring me pad thai. I stop this exchange - nuts in my savory dishes are a no-no. The waiter said he'd make it sans peanuts. This impresses me. Mostly because it makes me think food here is made to order. OR they made the bus boy pick out the peanuts one by one... My friend gets a chicken and vegetables dish, which comes with white rice. We basically shared the two entrees. This food was awesome. I took home the leftover pad thai and finished it later...that night.

Mozart's Coffee Roasters

📍 Address: 3825 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin

Stars: (4)

Mozart's has become one of our birthday and Christmas celebration places we have dinner somewhere and go for coffee. I definitely agree with the consensus while the coffee and deserts are nice the service most definitely needs a little help. Really the only thing it has going is the location, which is lovely.
