KINGS MISTREATS CUSTOMERS. I called to ask if bringing 15-20 people to bowl or play pool the following night would be ok. They said they didn't make reservations, but told me they thought it would be no problem because no college kids during January. I figured if we had to wait for pool tables or lanes we could chill at the bar. We got there (with 20 guests! ) and they were CLOSED for a corporate event. Someone did email me after I posted this though. Thanks for the apology. But I don't think I'll be back.

This restaurant has been one of the best discoveries I have made in Portland so far. The dishes are great, the staff is friendly and actually provide service, and the environs are clean and low-key. I make it a point to try a different dish each time I come here and I have yet to be disappointed. They have a lunch buffet that I have yet to try (people line up for it) but fully intend to. The dinner (I never order a la carte) is so filling that I take half my food home (and I'm a big fella). The mango lassi is a perennial favourite and the drinks are reasonably priced. TLDR: Best Indian joint I've been to in a long time.

Wonderful burgers from a kind staff! I started coming here, based on the rave reviews. And I have to say that they were right on point. Moreover, the people who work here always go above and beyond. I will always recommend this place to family and friends.
The Butcher Shop

I feel really conflicted by my experience here. We drove across town to the South End and finally found parking, but since the Butcher Shop doesn't take reservations, we had to put our names on a list (even though we arrived fairly early in anticipation of a possible wait), There was no space at the bar, so we walked across the street to B&G Oysters (another Barbara Lynch restaurant) for a glass of wine. There was no seating here either, since all bar seating is used for ordering full meals. Given that we came to the Butcher Shop for dinner (and therefore will probably be spending $$$$), why is it so difficult to order a glass of wine at not one, but two Barbara Lynch restaurants, while we endure the hour wait?We finally were seated, but of course, after an hour wait, can't sit at an actual table. No, we have to eat at the bar. For a birthday dinner. Even though there were open tables (which apparently must be allotted for parties of four, not two) and even though the restaurant allots a significant chunk of space to its "performance art" butcher shop table where some guy methodically packages meat to prove that yes, we are at a butcher shop, in case anyone forgot.Enormous wine selection, but it was categorized oddly. However, the waiter was very helpful at making sure we enjoyed the wine we ordered. The actual menu was disappointing. The seared fig salad was unimpressive. My boyfriend ordered the Del Monico steak. Obviously, at $50 to $60 this came with no sides, so we had to spend $8 for a single ear of corn and $8 for some fingerling potatoes. The steak was fine, but for the price we were expecting something stellar. Also, it came essentially raw. We would have sent the steak back, but it was so dimly lit that it took a couple bites to fully realize just how undercooked it was and by then it was too late to send back. I will eat almost anything as rare as possible, but this was really, really rare. Like, I think it was softly mooing. I've had some great steak in my life, and this was fine but we expected better. I mean, even I can make a better seared steak. We also ordered a ravioli dish (something like a meat ravioli in mushroom sauce), and of course, it came with 3 microscopic ravioli. For someone like myself who has spent years in Italy, it's a bit offensive to spend over $20 on a bowl of 3 ravioli, some mushrooms, and cream. After dropping some serious $$$$, we easily could have eaten more. Is this a concept restaurant where Barbara Lynch tries to make dinner as difficult to enjoy as possible, and then sees how many hoops people will jump through for their meal?Sticking with Eastern Standard and my other standbyes.
